Nobody's nice, when you're older your heart turns to ice (cream).

It's the beginning of an extended and enduring winter, an underwhelming period of darkness, a forlorn absence of meaning, it's very dark.

So let's talk about warm and soft stuff like:
*Introducing a new monthly wine club level, 1 bottle + 1 pint for $32+tax.
*10% off at both shops if you choose Cash App when checking out online.
*The return of pot pies.
*Wine clubs make a great gift, so does merch.

Details on these and more (rare ice cream still available in Union Sq) below.

Have you forgotten how to love yourself.

I don't know how to start this newsletter, so do you want to hear about the time when I was really little and I gave an old man the finger because I didn't think he'd be able to see me, but then he did, which oopsie doopsie, I guess there's not much more story, but I'll do my best. When I was, I don't know, seven? five? six? I was playing outside in the driveway in the minivan with the door open just being a bored kid in the suburbs and the driveway was a little bit below grade so there was a three foot wall which meant I was barely visible as a bored kid in the suburbs sitting in the minivan, think one of those early Dodge Caravans. And to a bored six year old, barely visible means invisible, doesn't it, rhetorical, it does. We lived 4-5 houses from Cleveland Rd, a busier cross street, about 200 yards away (because this is a factually rigorous newsletter I measured on Google Maps and it was actually 300 feet) from the corner. So here I am a tiny child, functionally invisible in all facets of my life, and basically invisible behind a wall in the open door of a minivan, 200 yards (300 feet) from this cross street and I see an old man walking by and I think what any little kid in this situation would think, hell yeah, let's give this guy the finger, there's no way he can see us and then I thought why are we talking in the third person.

And I bet you can guess what happened next if you read the first sentence of the first paragraph OR have any sense of narrative arc because the old man was walking along probably not thinking nothing and just enjoying the cool weather and I know it was cool because I have a vision in my head of him wearing a pretty heavy coat and why do I have this vision? It's because Ol' Eagle Eyes McGee stopped his walk and was looking right down the street at me and the vision of this old man in a heavy coat was burned into my brain as I thought, there's no way you see me, I'm invisible, gramps, keep moving, but he didn't did he? No he just kept staring down the street at me and it was really terrible. This felt like it went on for forty minutes, though it was probably no more than three minutes, but it was an agonizing amount of time as it dawned on me how I wasn't being nice to this old man and also how much trouble I was going to get in when this man decided to come tell my parents what I had done because holy shit I was sitting in my parents' car in the driveway of the house they lived in and so for the second time that morning I did what any little kid would do and I ducked down behind the wall, crawled into the back of the minivan and lay down on the floor between the second and third bench for a long time thinking my life is over jk life rocks hoping the old man wasn't walking up the street. And I don't know what happened the rest of the day, but I imagine I know I was panicked about how this guy knew were my parents lived if he wanted to tell them about me giving him the finger. I don't think I've ever told anyone this story before so I hope you feel special and important. As always, there's a book recommendation if you make it to the bottom of the newsletter and you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by visiting those websites. Macaulay Culkin's middle name is Macaulay Culkin making his legal name Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin. You can look it up if you want. Spreadsheets are great, except when they're not. You've never heard this word for shapely buttocks.

A corrupt Supreme Court heard arguments this week in a case which will likely result in the weakening or complete reversal of Roe v Wade, so it's as good a time as any to remember abortion is a private health decision between a doctor and a pregnant person and to give money to the National Network of Abortion Funds.

Now on to trying to sell you stuff like a new option for our monthly Wine + Ice Cream Club. As you know, we've got the three bottle + three pints option for $70, but some of you mentioned not needing 3 bottles + three pints of ice cream per month, so this month we're introducing a 1+1 option for $32 plus tax. Each month, Chris is curating a new bottle of wine and I'll figure out an ice cream flavor for you. The wine club picks up generally the third week of the month, though the date shifts around a little bit and of course your kit will be available for pick up any date after the pick up date. The 1 bottle of wine + 1 pint of ice cream also makes a really good gift for yourself or someone else. Order here. On the invention of Gummi Worms. Every machine is a smoke machine if you really want it to be.

Consider also sending your pals some Gracie's merch including our world's softest Ice Cream Weather zip hoodie sweatshirt, very comfy sweatpants, winter pom pom beanie, and all our shirts, fanny packs, etc. All shipped orders come with stickers and/or buttons. These are also available for pick up in Union Square (and mostly available in Kendall Square). If you select Cash App as your payment option you'll save 10% on your whole order all month long. Pineapple pizza is not a crime. Cats where they shouldn't be. Cat's where they shouldn't be.

There are other things which make a good gift, too, including tickets to our pop up series with chef Amanda Lowry. Our next event is sold out, but we've got plenty of others ready to wow you in January and February. Click here to see the full list. If you select Cash App as your payment option you'll save 10% on your whole order all month long. Do cats like pistachio ice cream? I always imagine how long this took to accomplish.

It's peppermint stick ice cream season now. (Peppermint stick ice cream season is December into January and July/August in my opinion.) Starting Friday, we'll have peppermint stick ice cream in pints, by the scoop, and as ice cream pies in Union Square, and coming soon to Kendall Square, too. It's AMAZING with hot fudge. You can see what pints or scoops we have available in Union Square if you want to and please, please, please, please (I'm not afraid to beg for something I want badlyyyyy) order some pints to stock up your freezer. The cold weather is killing us this year. If you select Cash App as your payment option you'll save 10% on your whole order all month long. Here is another song I like to listen to. Fashionable cat. Not every dream is something to pursue.

We've still got some Frank's RedHot ice cream at both shops, order at Kendall Square or Union Square. We've got a lot of different ice cream pies in Union Square. In Kendall, we'll make the pie to order if you give us a few hours notice. Along with a fall cocktail list, we've also got a four new beers from White Lion Brewing in Springfield for you to drink with your lunch or dinner or ice cream. If you select Cash App as your payment option you'll save 10% on your whole order all month long.

Last winter, one of the brightest spots were the deliciously flaky pot pies James made at Earnest for you to bake at home. I think I ate 40 of them. They're cheddar crust on top of chicken, onion, carrot, celery, peas, and a whole lot of thyme and parsley, in a sauce made with slow cooked chicken stock and apple cider. Next week we'll be re-introducing the vegetarian mushroom pot pies as well. These 5 inch pies are a pound each, and more than enough food for one person, or enough for two people with a side or two. When you get it home, put it in the oven at 375 for 45 minutes until golden toasty. Click here to order one today. If you select Cash App as your payment option you'll save 10% on your whole order all month long.

Thank you for reading, forward this to your friends so they can read it, too, and thank you for all your previous support. There are no exclamation points in the newsletter this week which is what we try to do regularly. Would you like a book recommendation? How about Matrix by Lauren Groff. I really liked Fates and Furies and Matrix was good, too, but a completely different kind of story. If you think you might want to read about a bad ass world building nun, this one's for you. It's good, you should read it. Buy it at Porter Square Books or Amazon.
Gracie's + Earnest Drinks team

Stars bloom in the warm summer night.

It's the beginning of a long and never ending winter, a brutal season of grayness, a desolation so pure our current communication technology, words and pictures, can't describe it justly.

So let's talk about warm and soft stuff like:
*$10 off all the pop ups this weekend only. Use code turkeybutt at check out. Our next pop up, the Late Autumn Farm Dinner, is Wednesday the 1st at 6pm. It's 4 courses, with 4 beverage pairings for $70. (A bargain featuring black garlic tagliatelle). All the pop ups are listed here.
*This week's introduction is 350+ words of food facts, many of which I totally made up.
*Gracie's in Union Square turned 7 this month and I frogot because sometimes I froget things.

Details on these and more (rare ice cream still available in Union Sq) below.

Sitting with silence.

Today will be a little shorter with a slightly different format. So let's talk food facts. Some of these facts are real and some are fake and you'll just have to decide which ones are are which, but if you've got to know, send a note and I'll probably remember which ones I made up. No promises. Why are we doing real and fake food facts? Because otherwise the newsletter just starts with naked commerce and you need a little romancing with nice words and some giggles before the transactional nature of our marketing efforts become apparent, no? Four million pounds of hash browns are sold in New York everyday. Bananas are berries. Strawberries are not. Raspberries are roses. Black raspberries are real. Pistachios are fruits and everyone knows tomatoes are fruits, but did you know persimmons are vegetables and also eggplants are fruit and are called eggplants because they were first cultivated in Belgium by the botanist Porter Egg? Brussels sprouts taste better now than they did when we were younger because a Dutch scientist made a better Brussels. Brussels are vegetables in the same family as kale obviously and less obviously acorns. And did you know there are 283 varieties of mango in India and 400 in Florida and there are more varieties of carrot than mango and orange combined. Broccoli contains more protein than steak and steak contains more hydroxycologorcine than apples.

I've mentioned before how if they didn't want you to eat the stickers on fruit they shouldn't make them minty, but they absolutely should do a Thanksgiving series and make them taste like mashed potatoes. Like we don't have that technology? Preposterous. In the United States 83% of all turkey purchased (by weight) is purchased this week, while 88% of all green beans (by weight) are purchased this week, while 60 million pounds of Velveeta are sold in November and December. In fact, the monetary value of turkey sold this week is equal to the California GDP, which is the 11th largest GDP in the world. This one was told to me last week by someone who worked at Kraft and I may have heard incorrectly, but I'm trying to get this fact, at least, correct. 42% of American pumpkins come from Illinois, pumpkin pie became popular during the Civil War because pumpkins were grown on small farms, not plantations, and have you ever seen an ice cream shop bail out of the subject of a newsletter introduction right in the middle because it might be too boring? NOW YOU HAVE. OK fine, lots of you are traveling by various methods and so here are two good bands I saw when I was younger with poetically good travel-related names: Rain like the Sound of Trains and Planes Mistaken for Stars. Do any of you have any very bad Thanksgiving travel experiences? I'm sure you've missed a train or two. (And we're so far gone here, the both of us, obviously, but not not so far gone we can't get ourselves out of this paragraph with a relevant ending.) My Thanksgiving travel has been generally without incident, but one time I was in Berlin on Thanksgiving and we were in a restaurant and the server spoke very good English but didn't know how to translate das Wild and so she said, "Like Bambi," which did a good job of translating the dish, but did not sell the dish. As always, there's a book recommendation if you make it to the bottom of the newsletter and you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by visiting those websites. This is the funniest thing I saw this year, no question. Don't experiment on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is as good a time as any, better even, to support Native issues in an effort to affirm the dignity and humanity of all people in our community. This thread is a good start for some places to start if you wanted to look into it. More locally you can support MCNAA or NAIC of Boston. Related: I just read an enjoyed We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy by Kliph Nesterof.

No one loves commerce as much as I do, and so to celebrate commerce, use code turkeybutt at check out to save $10 per ticket on every pop up we've got scheduled with Amanda Lowery. This weekend only. On Wednesday, December 1, we've got a Late Autumn Farm Dinner celebrating the farm bounty of late November/early December. It's a delicious looking menu, roasted beet soup, black garlic tagliatelle, braised beef short ribs, and dessert paired with 4 beverages as well. You can grab a ticket today and save $10. All the pop ups are listed here. Nothing better than dreaming of something creative and then executing on it. I used to be obsessed with British people doing American accents, but this cured me. If you've got $1775, consider a 55 gallon drum of personal lube. Yes, really.

Welp, Gracie's in Union Square turned 7 this month and I totally frogot to do a party or tell you about it in the newsletter. This is a thing what happens when you get older, apparently, or have two shops and a pandemic, frogetting stuff is. Either way, maybe next year I'll remember. Thanks for being awesome supporters of the Union Square shop these last 7 years. Something about me is I've never really been able to think years in advance and so being open for 7 years is not something I could have planned before we opened, but it seems fine, I'll keep doing it. Here is another song I like to listen to.

This paragraph is the same as last week because I frogot to put the lemon verbena and fresh mint pints up for sale until Saturday last week. You can see what pints or scoops we have available in Union Square if you want to. We're going to have once a year fresh mint chip and lemon verbena, both grown with herbs from my garden, available on Friday in Union Square. Please don't forget to keep your freezer packed up with pints, it helps us cover overhead during the winter. If you order in advance it's a real quick experience. We've still got some Frank's RedHot ice cream at both shops, order at Kendall Square or Union Square. We've got 26 different ice cream pies in Union Square. In Kendall, we'll make the pie to order if you give us a few hours notice. Along with a fall cocktail list, we've also got a four new beers from White Lion Brewing in Springfield for you to drink with your lunch or dinner or ice cream.

I'm out of stuff to try to sell you this week because we're trying to keep the newsletter short, right, so here's all of the fun stuff which would have been included. Please be whelmed.
How to dry shoes in the dryer.
Mesmerizing goose running.
Cats where they shouldn't be.
This lady puts raisins in everything, which sounds criminal, but she's got 1.8 million followers, so I think it's bit, and I spent 24 hours howling and crying laughing because she's obviously very good at cooking and cooking videos.
Here is a lovely story of how you can just drop anything off at a chain grocery store. I encourage you to watch them all. Beginning | Middle | End.
Baby lions can roar, but they're really bad at it, but it's really cute.

Thank you for reading, forward this to your friends so they can read it, too, and thank you for all your previous support. There are no exclamation points in the newsletter this week which is what we try to do regularly. Would you like a book recommendation? How about Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead. My favorite book last year was Deacon King Kong, a story set in black New York City in the 60s/70s. Harlem Shuffle is set similarly, with well developed characters, a great story, and excellent writing. It's good, you should read it. Buy it at Porter Square Books or Amazon.
Gracie's + Earnest Drinks team

Jealous of your attention, we're a clown here to entertain.

Here are today's headlines:
*We've got a boatload of tasty winter specials available starting Monday. Pre-order/see the menu here to help us plan. Consider Negroni cranberry sauceand great on everything herb butter.
*I've got until Saturday to sell 22 more pies to support Community Servings in their efforts.
*Our next pop up is a Late Autumn Farm Dinner the week after Thanksgiving. 4 course, 4 bev pairings, $70.
*You missed this month's pick up for this month's Wine + Ice Cream Club, but sign up for next month. 3 curated wines + 3 pints of ice cream picked up monthly for $70.

Details on these and more (rare ice cream available in Union Sq) below.

You don't have to say anything, just listen.

A couple weeks ago I told you a story about when I was a tour manager for a band made up of my friends and we got into some adventures on occasion and here is another one of them. We were in Rhinecliff or Rhinebeck, New York at a place called the Rhinecliff or Rhinebeck Hotel and I googled it just now and I think it was the Rhinecliff and it was this old building with concerts in the bar, which was a small room, not conducive for concerts, and especially tight with bigger bands, not bigger by popularity, but by number of members and equipment, though we did OK in New York so not terribly conducive for more popular bands either, and bad rooms is the kind of thing what happens when you're traveling around the Northeast performing every weekend. So it was fine, I think they'd given us dinner or at least gotten us pizza. And after the show we were planning on finding a hotel somewhere when someone whose name I can't remember, but for the sake of the story, let's say his name is Scott, offered to let us stay at his house and he said he had enough room and so we said yes because staying on stranger's floor is something we did a lot of because sometimes they had lots of couches or they'd make breakfast sometimes or sometimes they had super plush carpets in rooms with good curtains keeping it dark in the morning and no one ever read our tarot, but if they had, it would have been something like this. The really soft carpets were my favorite.

And so we told Scott we'd just pack up and could he wait and he said he would and then he came back with written out directions and said he had to head over for a party but he'd meet us there and the thing was this was a super long time ago, so there weren't any smartphones with map apps for us to to follow, and this is important, remember this, so we finished packing up, which you might recall from the last story takes longer than it should because by then some of the guys are drunk and can't carry shit because they've actually gotten drunker than it would have seemed possible in such a short amount of time and anyway during loadout the only way out is through, as I've mentioned, so we made it happen eventually, got in the van and started following Scott's directions out of the hamlet of Rhinecliff into the woods. The directions were not great and we ended up getting lost, a regular occurrence because I was in charge of directions even though I had no business being in charge of directions because I was much, much better at other necessary tasks. So we ended up having to backtrack and start over and then we got to where we thought the house ought to have been, but it was totally dark in the woods and the house was dark, too, and Scott had said there would be a party, and maybe it took longer than we thought to get over there and the party had ended, but when we knocked on the door no one answered, and then when we tried the door it was unlocked so, I mean, what would you do at that point?

We did what you would have done, we went with the flow. We went into this dark house which had a huge living room, but only one loveseat and the floors were hardwood with worn oriental rugs, not the super plush stuff my bony ass needed to be comfy, so 0 for 2, but maybe they'd make breakfast and after a while we rolled out our sleeping bags and went to sleep. And the other thing about the house was it was very cold which we didn't notice at first. I woke up freezing at one point and there was a cat sitting sitting on me, which was surprising to me for several reasons, and I was fine with cats then, but this one was big and had lots of sap in its fur, which I understand might happen to an outdoor cat in the woods. So I wasn't terribly comfortable with any part of the situation, frankly, but I was very cold and the cat was heavy and warm. It was kind of scary if I'm being honest and after I fell back asleep, I ended up having a lot of dreams about this big, sappy cat. The cat left me at some point to sleep on Rob's back. I woke up in the morning to the sounds of someone making coffee in the kitchen, but it wasn't Scott, and the person making coffee said she didn't know a Scott either, which, you have to admit is troubling in this situation, at least, but she also didn't seem surprised to find 8 dudes sleeping on her floor. Then the woman making coffee left and we got our things together and we left and we've never figured out if we were in Scott's house or not, but either way it was the right house for us because no one called the cops, which is nice. As always, there's a book recommendation if you make it to the bottom of the newsletter and you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by visiting those websites. This guy loves trains. I think your eyes are the prettiest, but these are also nice.

We've got a bunch of tasty offerings to make the rest of your month tastier. Beginning on Monday, you've got all month to pick up delicious items like Negroni cranberry sauce, which is cranberries, orange, rosemary, gin, and vermouth, all playing nicely in a pot. The alcohol gets burned off so everyone is eligible to eat it. Click this link and scroll down to see all the options which can be picked up Mon-Weds next week or any time after. Peep the delicious vegetarian gravy and the out of this world herb butter. These shimmering bees are cool as hell, kind of like a split flap sign in a train station. Oh and more on bees, did you know they can just make new queens by giving a baby bee extra food? Here is another song I like to listen to.

I have until Saturday to sell 22 more pies to support Community Servings' Pie in the Sky fundraiser. Community Servings expands every year in their efforts to provide healthy, nutritious, and delicious meals for people too sick to cook for themselves. If their clients have a family, they drop meals for them, too. If their client has dietary restrictions, Community Services creates a menu that works. The way it works is you buy a pie, which raises enough money to feed a CS client for a week, and then you get a pie to pick up on Tuesday for Thanksgiving. You can choose pick up locations all around this part of the state, though counts on certain pies are limited in some locations. If you want, you can pick up your pies at Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. It's still a skill even if it's useless.

We had our first pop up with Chef Amanda Lowry on Wednesday and it went swimmingly. Every two weeks for the rest of the winter Amanda will be popping up at Earnest Drinks featuring a variety of different menu themes. Next up a Late Autumn Farm Dinner the week after Thanksgiving. 4 course, 4 beverage pairings, $70. From casual 3 course casual fare menus to more formal menus like the Fest of Seven Fishes. Check out the full list here. So you know, Amanda was chef at Barbara Lynch's Butcher Shop for 3 years before the pandemic during which she opened Dovetail (where you can grab Gracie's pints) before moving on to open Punch Bowl in Brookline (where you can also grab Gracie's pints) with the Ziskin family. Her next adventure is at The Ford in Medford, opening early 2022. They should get Gracie's pints, I'm just saying. Please check out the full list of pop ups and buy your tickets if you're interested because they are limited. Capybara bread.

If you're not already signed up, it's too late for this month's Wine + Ice Cream Club at Earnest Drinks. But consider for next month: 3 curated bottles of wine + 3 pints of ice cream for $70. Next month we might introduce a one bottle + one pint option, how would that be? This month we have three wines perfect for the Thanksgiving table (or couch, or kitchen, maybe the park.) First, a Mexican white wine with a littttle bit of skin contact. It’s a woman-produced wine out of Baja California, which we love as women producers are severely underrepresented in the wine world, as is Mexican wine tbh. Next we have two “nouveau” red wines, which are the first wines of the 2021 harvest. These young, fresh wines aren’t meant for storing in your wine cellar (or, if you’re anything like me, the bottom of your closet.) They’re meant to be drank early and often, possibly while basting the turkey or blasting the potatoes. For ice cream this month, we have Orange Spice Cranberry Cookie, and Lemon Verbena and Fresh Mint Chip, both of which made with herbs from my garden. Harvest Series. Cats where they shouldn't be and again cats where they shouldn't be.

Along with a fall cocktail list, we've also got a trio of new Winter Hill Brewing Company beers at Earnest Drinks for you to drink with your lunch or dinner or ice cream. Really we've got plenty of fine beverages and you should come drink some of them because the winter is long and cold and we are warm and welcoming.

Earnest Drinks is a great option if you're planning a small vaxxed holiday celebration or if you need lunch brought to your office or looking for make your own sundae kits to give as gifts for clients or pre-made sundaes for your team at work. This is an area of the business we really need to improve, please help. Click this link to send an email for more information.

Your favorite ice cream store will write you a custom poem or haiku if that's what you want your favorite ice cream store to do.

Our dinner menu is available at Earnest Drinks Thursday-Sunday this week. You can make a dinner or lunch reservation at Earnest Drinks by emailing chris@graciesicecre.am.

Don't be nervous, we have fun here.

Here's the Gracie's / Earnest Drinks Newsletter, welcome if it's your first time. I try to make the newsletter fun so you read it because I am desperate for you to read it. Thanks for reading again if it's not your first time. (If you're not interested, there's an unsubscribe at the bottom and I'm sorry.) Today there's a picture right at the top of the newsletter to tell you about this excellent pop up we're doing on November 17 with Chef Amanda Lowery. 3 courses, 3 beer pairings for only $40. Comfort vibes with a little bit of sass. More on the other pop ups below, see the list here. Also, more on the Wine + Ice Cream Clubbelow. 3 curated wines + 3 pints of ice cream picked up monthly for $70. Also more on our Thanksgiving specials to make your special day specialer.

Let's talk bog spiders, which have nothing to do with ice cream.

It's official cranberry season, and as you must know, the cranberry is the Official Berry of the Commonwealth. (Unrelated, North Carolina can't decide and has both a state red berry and state blue berry. (You'll never guess the official blue berry of NC.)) Our state boasts 30% of global cranberry acreage, which is a lot and also a very nice and real fact. Cranberries are grown in bogs, but since bogs can't generally support a large person's weight, farmers harvest cranberries by flooding the bog and corralling the cranberries together like so many tart reddish sheep. And all this is needless preamble to get to what I really want to tell you about which is if you try to get a job at a cranberry bog you might get asked how you feel about spiders and that's a weird interview question and you might consider not telling the truth because what you want to do is farm cranberries like a cranberry farmer, but if you do have a problem with spiders and you don't say anything it's going to be another problem, a big one. You see, cranberry farms have been moving towards more organic farming methods which precludes the use of pesticides and so to keep the insect population down, the farmers encourage wolf spiders to live in the bogs. I'm sorry, I meant WOLF SPIDERS. And when they flood the bogs to harvest the cranberries, the WOLF SPIDERS, who are probably called WOLF SPIDERS because they look like little 8 legged wolves, don't ask me, I'm not an arachnobiologist, flee the deluge for higher ground, because while they can swim, they don't like it, and guess what the higher ground is, Joann, it's you. You're the higher ground. And so the cranberry farmers will ask you how you feel about spiders before hiring you because you might have dozens of swimming WOLF SPIDERS climbing out of the water up your legs and into your hair, but you've got to be chill with it because the WOLF SPIDERS are your fellow cranberry bog employees and everyone, even WOLF SPIDERS deserve a safe work environment. Wear a turtleneck or something. Maybe you're thinking, it's fine, WOLF SPIDERS don't bite, and if they do, they're not venomous, but they do bite and they are venomous, but maybe it all works out if you let them use you for higher ground. More bog spider info here. As always, there's a book recommendation if you make it to the bottom of the newsletter and you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by visiting those websites. Screaming bunny. Screaming frog. Screaming goats.

There’s still a few days to sign up for this month’s Wine + Ice Cream Club at Earnest Drinks. 3 curated bottles of wine + 3 pints of ice cream for $70. Order by Saturday to secure your slot. Pick up is Saturday, November 20th from 12-2, but if you need us to hang on to it a few days it's no problem. You saying a shrimp fried this rice? There's a lot happening here. One time when I was very little, I went in the ball pit at Sesame Place and it was terrifying, much as I imagine this experience was. Definitely thought I was going to get swallowed whole.

Our first pop up with Chef Amanda Lowry is next Wednesday. Pints, Pretzels, and Pork Schnitzels coming up on Nomember 17. $40 for 3 courses and 3 beer pairings. Grab a ticket now. Glitter glitter everywhere and not a drop to eat unless you believe in yourself.

There is a substantial amount of news in today's newsletter and so this introduction will be substantially shorter than last week's and yet I'm desperate for you to read it, I need you to read it, so I wanted to make it really special, to make it really shiny, to nail it like one of those well-timed Live selfies where you're making one face in preview and another by the end of the Live, to make it really sparkle and to that end how much do you actually know about glitter? I mean really. The idea of glitter, making things really sparkle, has been around for at least thirty to forty thousand years, which is a long time, as you know, since crushed mica was used in cave drawings to add some shimmer and glam and the ancient Egyptians used either crushed beetles or malachite to get a similar sparkle. A personal glitter anecdote: people who know me well might imagine me having an aversion to glitter, but I have never once gotten mad at my kids for spilling glitter all over the house, something they have done on more than one occasion, and don't tell them, but I think it's delightful. When I reread the previous sentence it sounds facetious, but I am serious as a cardinal. Onward.

Glitter as we know it was commoditized in 1934, I think in New Jersey, it doesn't matter unless you're from New Jersey, and there are over 20K kinds of glitter made today, most of it in New Jersey, which doesn't matter, including edible glitter, but really all glitter is edible if you believe in yourself, but I'm not a doctor, so talk to your doctor if you think shiny poop might be right for you. It might be. Here's something you can do with glitter, put it on your face. Another thing is you can put a little bit in your clothing and leave a shiny piece of yourself behind for someone to remember you after you've gone. Here is a history of glitter, and another, and another. And this is an amazingly informational NY Times article about glitter which says 10 pounds of glitter is enough glitter for 500K nail polish bottles. And lastly, glitter is bad for the environment, because it's mostly microplastic, so you should 100% stop using, but maybe it's OK to keep using until just after Exxon and the rest of the Fortune 500 companies clean up their act. As always, there's a book recommendation if you make it to the bottom of the newsletter and you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by visiting those websites. Dogs in costume. A lot of them.

We are exasperatingly thrilled to play host this winter to a series of pop ups from Chef Amanda Lowry. Every two weeks for the rest of the winter Amanda will be popping up at Earnest Drinks featuring a variety of different menu themes. These run the gamut from casual 3 course casual fare menus to more formal menus like the Fest of Seven Fishes. Check out the full list here. Our first dinner is Pints, Pretzels, and Pork Schnitzels coming up on Nomember 17. $40 for 3 courses and 3 beer pairings. Do you hate the word gamut? I have mixed opinions. We've also put up our Thanksgiving specials menu featuring a gamut I mean bevy of tasty options to spruce up your meal. Click this link and scroll down to see our Thanksgiving at home options can be ordered until the Friday before Thanksgiving and picked up Mon-Weds the following week. Really we've got plenty of fine beverages and you should come drink some of them because the winter is long and cold and we are warm and welcoming. As you might remember the fall cocktail list has a theme and last week two people finally figured out the theme and I was so pleased, but two is a small number and the amount of y'all who could figure out the theme if you put your back in to it is far larger than two. Maybe you only guessed one time and then you stopped guessing forever? How could you do that to me? Criminally missed connection.

Yoooooooo, Chris figured out the wines for this month's Earnest Drinks / Gracie's Wine + Ice Cream Club and they are wonderful and I would tell you what they are but I need Chris to tell me what they are but now you're wondering how I know they're wonderful and the reason I know they're wonderful is I fucking trust Chris when it comes to wine and other things as well so I vouch for the wines OK? I think I know two of the ice creams we'll include already and one of them might be lemon verbena which is growing in my garden currently, but recently cold weather has me reading the writing on the wall with the wall being... time? I don't know and the writing being about how the plant is going to slowly freeze to death at which point it's utility as an ice cream flavoring will be diminished. Librarian motorcycle gang. Ryan Reynolds is in here and we're doing a wine dinner

Remember when we had pink Easter candy ice cream

And the caption said, "it's pink for a reason we can't tell you about yet, but has nothing to do with flavor, but I can't tell you why," Remember that? It was 2019. And the reason is because I had to make 3 different batches of pink ice cream so the director of a movie could choose which shade of pink he wanted for his movie. And the reason a director was checking pink shades of ice cream is because we were hired to make pink ice cream for the Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy, a movie in which the only flavor of ice cream is bubblegum. The movie comes out Friday, and all this time I've been wondering if the ice cream made it into the film because I was never sure, but it turns out it did and it was in some previews this week, including this one. They used a pink and green version of our logo, too. It's pretty neat that people all over the world are going to see ice cream Pete made in our store because Noah from Gather Here works on movie props and gave us a call. Now we just have to figure out how to get Ryan Reynolds some black raspberry chip. As always, you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by clicking the links.

On Saturday, August 28th at 5:30, we'll be hostingour first wine dinner with our friends at Tozi Imports. Chef James LaVigne will be preparing a 5-course menu with each course paired with a different wine showcasing the variety of wines being produced in Mexico. These tickets are limited in that there aren't many of them available and we'll only be doing one seating.5 courses, 5 wines, $80. It's a treat and you deserve it.Become ungovernable.Pink salt ponds.

To that end, this week's Friday night guided wine tasting with Chris is 3 Mexican wines. A Sauvignon Blanc, an unoaked Chardonnay, and a Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Tasting is 5-7PM Friday, three pours for $10.Order ahead if you'd like, or just show up. Here's a song called Protection by Graham Parkermy friend sent me earlier this week and I keep listening to it over and over. Slow pace, fast pace,Lee Pace.

Also we used to do Make Your Own Dream Ice Cream Class before the pandemic and we're going to start doing that again. The way it works is you get a group together and come up with an ice cream flavor you want to make then you tell us that flavor and give us your money and then you come in and we make the ice cream together. The classes are about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the number of questions, and you get to take home some of the ice cream after the class when it's ready. Depending on how it comes out, it may end up on our menu. If you're interested in learning more, get in touch. Otter Zen. Want to feel very old?

Both shops will have Free Guy Bubblegum ice cream available for scoops on Friday maybe possibly Saturday. Free Guy Bubblegum is pink sweet cream which we made without bubblegum flavor because I didn't think it was fair to make the actors eat that much bubblegum ice cream. It's pink, it's got gumballs, it tastes like sweet cream. This ends exactly how you think it will. Afancy slideandfancy lightning, both at a baseball game.

We've got a bunch of new bears I mean beersin stock from White Lion. We're having a variety of scheduling challenges as we endeavor to continue operations without anyone getting burned out. There weren't any freezer issues this week yet, but it was 95+ on Wednesday and forecast to be that hot through Saturday and the hardening cabinet doesn't work when it's that hot so I shut it off. What if I rush the newsletter what then

What if I rush the newsletter what then

A thing that happens if you have ice cream shops and/or restaurants is you need packaging to put ice cream and/or food in so people can take it home with them if they're not eating it at your place. And a thing that's been happening the last year and a half or so is supply lines are all banged up pretty severely which means the packaging you HAD been using is sometimes all of a sudden out of stock across all of the different suppliers and a thing that happened when that happens is I spend more than two hours on the internet trying to find usable take out containers when I should be writing a newsletter and I'm gonna try not to make this whole thing a dour experience, but I'm not going to promise anything ever again because if you can't get your ice cream pint in the pint you're used to all bets are off, aren't they? It was hot on Monday and Tuesday, but I didn't think it was too hot, but it was hot enough that the freezer decided to stop working. Which was lame. Luckily we caught it in time and saved everything and it seems like turning it off and then on again "fixed it." At least it was fixed immediately after turning it off and on. Maybe it's broken again now, which would be really annoying. On Monday, I got update on the freezer I ordered at the end of April which was, "they lost their foam again. the production line is shut down. no updates." Taste chilled red wine or ice cream on Friday

It's been very exciting welcoming you all inside Earnest Drinks for dinner or drinks or lunch or what have you. It's especially exciting watching y'all experience the space approximately how we had intended prior to Covid. In any case, come by. Being open inside is nice because we don't have to worry about the whether, which if you haven't noticed has been very terrible, though it is nice right now. If you want to make a reservation, send an email to Chris, and we'll save you a table. As always, you can pre-order and pay for Gracie's in Union or Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square. You can order delivery from both locations just by clicking the links. Don't hate me, but this is a lot of spiders. And here's where he lets them climb on him. It's good on everything.

Wine time

Chris won’t stop talking about chilled red wine. He pops all of his reds in the fridge and thinks you should too, but he is also willing to acknowledge you might not want to and wine is a choice which you are welcome to make. On Friday from 5-7, come taste these three wines which blur the the line between rosé and red, and stay for our veggie bolognese which’ll go smashingly with our special by-the-glass options. Consider also, a bbq pork three way or vegan three way. Guided wine tasting, 3 pours $10. Are you a fan of poetry written by an ice cream shop? Have I got the offer for you. You can order a poem or haiku if you want. If you don't want to tell me what the poem should be about, I'll make something up. In regards to my bona fides here's a link to a picture book I wrote a couple years ago.

The restaurant industry feels very brittle at the moment. If you'd like to help us feel less brittle, here are 6 ways, 3 of which are pretty easy and 3 of which are even easier.
1) Ask Congress to refill the Restaurant Revitalization Fund.
2) If you work in an office that caters lunch, recommend Earnest Drinks/Gracie's for catering. Get in touch for info.
3) Go to Gracie's and Earnest Drinks, take pictures of what you get, post those pictures on the internet tagging us.

4) Follow Gracie's and Earnest Drinks on Instagram
5) Follow Gracie's on Twitter
6) If you like this newsletter, post about it on social media and/or tell you friends you think they'd enjoy subscribing.

Apparel time

Posting of shirts will continue until morale improves. What greater way to show you love me I mean Gracie's than getting a t-shirt for yourself and one for your friend or sibling. There's the Flamingo Out of Step T-Shirt: Union Square orKendall Square or Online and the Ice Cream Weather Tank Top: Union Squareor Kendall Square or Online. I think you should get one. 36 Jason Statham posters. How about some cloud iridescence. It's a phenomenal phenomenon.

Dinner time

Just copying this paragraph from last week because it's been a day, but dinner is still important and these facts haven't changed. You should come by and try something off our dinner menu. You can come inside with your friends and have fun. Duck confit and tagliatelle bolognese are my favorites, but the pulled pork ravioli and spaghetti and meatballs are also good. On the lunch front, did you know our mushroom steak and cheese won Best of Boston from Boston Magazine? Click the link and scroll down to read the blurb.

Ice cream time

Here's a list of the pints we have in Union Square right this second. What do you want to know? What questions do you have? Respond to this email with an ice cream question and I will answer it. Respond to this email with an ice cream opinion and I will tell you if you're right or wrong. Here's a cat trying to bite something a cat shouldn't bite. Delivery is an option when you order off our website.

Time time

Our hours:
Gracie's in Union 2-9pm every day.
Earnest Drinks in Kendall 11-9 Monday-Friday, 12-8 on Saturday, 12-7 on Sunday.

Fun time

Hey look, the charcuterie board is back. Unrelated: Here's a fly killer. Unrelated: Here's a stork dropping a off a baby. Unrelated: Cat music.

Gift time

We have plastic gift cards at both shops that have to be purchased in person ($15 minimum) and digital gift cards you can purchase online for Earnest Drinks in Kendall Square and Gracie's in Union Square. Consider a made to order ice cream pie? We're testing out flamingo ice cream cakes. I don't know if you'll see this. Still need a gift? Get someone one of our new T-Shirts and new Tank Tops.

Please for the love of all nice things, help us find a cook time

This is the same paragraph every week about needing a cook. Like every other restaurant in the area, we're still hoping to hire a cook. That link may be dead, but we still need a cook. Send a note if you're interested. We're going to try to pay you right, give you a good lifestyle outside of work, and give you schedule flexibility in case you have other stuff going on. Our next cook will be guaranteed at least $18 an hour, room to grow, and we demand you maintain a life outside of the shop because there are more important things than work. We're not open late, so you won't be working late. Additionally, our shop has a brand new HVAC so you won't be sweating your ass off on a poorly ventilated hot line with someone screaming at you.

Equipment time

Knock on wood there were no freezer issues yet this week, but instead of the freezer, the ice cream machine decided to throw off the yoke of ice cream making which is it's only job and it's only purpose and the only thing it's good for by busting its coupling for the third time in a year. This happens when the ice cream becomes too chonky to spin and the ice cream machine says, "Hold up, I don't want to spin anymore." Luckily, since this has happened three times last summer, I know it is a relatively quick fix. And I also know why it's happening, too. A weird thing about owning small businesses is if you're like me, things can feel like a disaster when they happen for the first time because you (I) don't know what it means for the future, but after it's happened several times you (I) can let it roll off your back You can see what ice cream we have in Union by clicking here.

Market time

Here is a list of stores you can get Gracie's Ice Cream pints besides either of our locations. Here's a helpful map if you're a visual person.
Pemberton Market, Cambridge
Dave's Fresh Pasta, Davis Square
Formaggio, Huron Village AND Kendall Square
Broadway Marketplace, Harvard Square
Concord Market, Concord
Punch Bowl / Hilton Garden Inn, Brookline
Dovetail, Charlestown
Buckalew's, Melrose
Vidalia's Market, Beverly
Picnic and Pantry, Somerville, Bow Market

If you shop at a local specialty grocery store that's not on this list, it's very helpful to us if you mention Gracie's to them the next time you're there.

Closing time

Thank you for reading, forward this to your friends so they can read it, too, and thank you for all your previous support. There are no exclamation points in the newsletter this week. Would you like a book recommendation? How about What's Mine and Yours by Naima Coster. It's a lyrically written story about love and family and race. You should read it. Buy it at Porter Square Books or Amazon.
